Smart Grid Meters Use IM
[...] The company announced this week that its PowerTalk system has been deployed in around 250 of the 5000 sites using its existing smart grid technology. PowerTalk represents an important step forward. It is already driving significant efficiencies in our site enablement process, and we are actively investing in future applications of presence technology to make the existing electric power grid more responsive, efficient, and reliable, said Tim Healy, EnerNOC's chairman and chief executive. [...] Whereas rival smart grid systems rely on automatically reading smart meters in the network according to a set schedule, EnerNOC claims its PowerTalk system uses presence technology to constantly monitor the status of each meter. [...] The system uses the open standard Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) to allow individual smart meters to relay information to a central dashboard which EnerNOC terms a Network Operations Center (NOC). EnerNoc claims that the use of the open XMPP protocol is key to making sure the technology is scalable and easy to manage. [...]

[...] It has great x86 technology, great networking technology, great processor technology. SPARC is extremely competitive. Solaris is a mature, tested operating system, the best one there is for large systems. Much faster than [IBM's] AIX, any day. Sun also has great open storage systems. [...] Sun has been a national treasure for the last couple of decades, Ellison said. Sun has fantastic technology. I think that if you put up IBM, HP and Sun strictly on a [technological] level, I'm not sure you wouldn't pick Sun, if they were all the same price. [...] Oracle is very interested in running airline reservation systems, banking systems and telecommunication systems, Ellison said, not in simply selling software, hardware and services that customers would put together and deploy. Wolfram Alpha “Answer Engine” Challenges Google Search
[...] The Wolfram platform is made up of several layers of technology, according to its inventors. There are many parts to it, each with significant innovations. Four key general areas are the data curation pipeline, the algorithmic computation system, the linguistic processing system, and the automated presentation system.. [...] As for the future of the platform, its makers claim that Wolfram. Alpha will be much more than a website. Wolfram. Alpha is being introduced first in the form of the wolframalpha.com website. But Wolfram. Alpha is really a technology and a platform that can be used and presented in many different ways. [...] The Wolfram. Virgin Media Trials File-Sharing Monitoring Tool
[...] Despite this, the trail is likely to raise the ire of privacy campaigners, including the likes of Stephen Fry, especially as CView's deep packet inspection is the same technology used by the Phorm advertising system trialled by BT, which permitted the monitoring and targeting of individual internet users, also without their consent. [...] Now it seems that Virgin Media has broken ranks with the news that it is trialling technology from data collection specialist Detica. However it was quick to point out that the system does not identify individual offenders. [...] Cview that apparently uses a form of deep packet inspection technology, but removes any IP addresses at the outset so that no activity can be tied to individual customers. It will work on aggregate traffic and looks to determine the proportion of file-sharing traffic that infringes copyright. [...]
Turning virtualisation management into a virtue
[...] Microsoft is trying to do the same thing, he says, so it can charge for management features (we review System Center Virtual Machine Manager ). Veeam doesn't actually provide the technology, but makes the technology work better, sitting in the middle, in an agnostic capacity.. [...] In the long term, a lot of the money around virtualisation will be in management, said Timashev. Microsoft is embedding the technology into its OS [operating system], so it's in every PC or laptop running Windows. But users will still need enterprise management software to manage this, he added. [...] And, if they have already invested in Microsoft System Centre or HP Open View - that is, it's use is well established within the business and IT workflow as the standard, corporate IT management framework - then we also support this by providing VMware monitoring connectors..
