IBM Opens £19m Green Mainframe Factory

The Poughkeepsie, N.Y., facility, which opened on 13 April, also will feature an energy-efficient design. The 56,000-square-foot building, housed within a larger building on IBM's 400-acre campus, is a testament to the company's commitment to the Mid-Valley.  [...] The facility also uses a hot-aisle, cool-aisle system for its servers, and such power-saving methods as energy-efficient fluorescent lights and occupancy sensors.  [...] The power-saving features in the facility are similar to those found in data centres, according to the company. Cooling is done through a closed-loop system that circulates chilled water. The cool air is used for such tasks as air conditioning and keeping systems cool.  [...]

Microsoft Builds Energy-Saving Data Centre

He explained that traditionally a product group self-manages their own lab in an office building but the new facility is a centrally managed and more energy-efficient alternative. The opening of Redmond Ridge is a big milestone and represents a real transition point in the company's culture, said Bernard.  [...] The company announced this week that the new site, dubbed Redmond Ridge 1, is designed to move servers used for software development and testing out of the Redmond campus into a more energy efficient facility which it says will help it cut its carbon emissions by up to 12,000 metric tons a year.  [...] Microsoft has announced that it is building a new energy efficient computing lab away from its main Redmond campus which should help the IT giant cut its carbon emissions but has also meant a shift in how software development teams work.  [...]

Northumbria University Gets Wyse to Sustainable IT

A major new deployment of energy efficient thin client computers complements campus green-building design features as part of an environmental drive.  [...] In addition to the thin-client deployment of Wyse, the entire south-facing Facade of the existing Northumberland building is covered with solar panels and the city centre campus is set up to harvest rainwater for use in the building. The cooling system used functions by blowing air over cold water.  [...] A green IT solution came to mind quite easily because the university was already a user of thin computers, stated Joe Evans, Northumbria University technical services manager. These consume a fraction of the electricity compared to a standard PC and generate hardly any heat.  [...]

Intel Recognised For Green Power Usage

Commenting on the company's placement at top of the renewable energy usage chart last year, Intel president and chief executive Paul Ottellini said that he hoped that Intel's investment in wind renewable energy would encourage others to follow suit. We have a long history of commitment to the environment and energy efficiency is an important consideration in everything we do, from building transistors to designing microprocessors and running our factories, he said.  [...] A statement released this week by the EPA said that the chip-maker purchased more than 1 billion kilowatt hours of so-called green power every year - roughly enough to to meet about 47 percent of the company's energy needs.  [...] Intel, along with most major tech companies is keen to be seen as green and environmentally friendly. However, the chip production industry has been criticised for the energy intensive nature of its processes and its use of raw materials.  [...]

IBM Looks to Emerging Markets To Expand Green Strategy

IBM recently inked three large-scale deals to help companies overseas design and build energy-efficient data centres, the latest examples of the hunger for green IT in emerging markets.  [...] IBM announced on 5 November a $5.4 million (£3.3 million) deal with Cosan, a sugar-energy group based in Sao Paulo, to redesign its IT infrastructure, and another deal with Slovak Telekom to build a new data centre in Bratislava, Slovakia. In addition, IBM signed an IT services deal with the Haryana-based Indian subsidiary of confectionary company Perfetti Van Melle to design, build and manage a green data centre.  [...] IBM's latest green data centre deals in emerging markets point towards the rapid adoption energy-efficient IT solutions outside the United States.  [...]

Intel Awarded Green Building Cert For Design Facility

Intel Awarded Green Building Cert For Design Facility

According to Intel, IDC 9's sustainable design has resulted in a 17 percent reduction in total building energy compared with normal buidlings based on the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) 90.1-2007 standard.  [...] The design centre, which is set to open in June, has been awarded a Leadership In Energy And Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification and is the first building in Israel to do so.  [...] Given the high summer temperatures experienced in the Haifa, Intel faced challenges in cooling the facility. Measures to insulate the building include a rooftop garden which the company said helps to prevent excess heat from being retained. Also lighting and air conditioning systems are individually controlled helping to reduce wasted energy from cooling or lighting non-productive areas.  [...]

Green Grid Measures Data Centre Efficiency

This is a programme designed to provide the IT industry with a multi-year set of design guidelines for data centre operators and designers, so they can build and/or run more energy-efficient data centres.  [...] The consortium of data centre-related technology companies took a major step on 4 Feb by publishing its first data centre energy-efficiency reporting guidelines at its second technical conference in San Jose.  [...] The Green Grid consortium has issued a set of guidelines to solve one of the trickiest issues facing sustainable computing - how to measure the efficiency of a data centre.  [...]

CeBIT 2009 Will Tackle Green IT Agenda

Especially in tough economic times, investing in green, energy-efficient IT makes sense on two counts, said Raue in a statement. First, companies get to modernise their IT systems, thereby generally streamlining their processes and building critical efficiency reserves.  [...] According to Sigmar Gabriel, German minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, although green and sustainable IT can have upfront costs it can also yield substantial savings. If the energy efficient technologies that are already available - and already in use by a small number of forward-looking organisations - were applied on a large scale, a total of 25.  [...] Responding to the need for companies to cut costs and cut carbon, Europe's largest technology exhibition CeBIT will feature a range of sustainably and energy efficient technology, according to organisers.  [...]

Dell Achieves EPA Green Server Status

Other features include Energy Smart power supplies, Energy Smart system design around aspects such as better venting and airflow and more efficient fan technology, and the use of more efficient memory and processors, including Intel's new quad-core Xeon 5500 Series Nehalem EP chips.  [...] Servers with the Energy Star will be about 30 percent more energy efficient than standard servers, according to the agency.  [...] Dell's Energy Smart initiative was the catalyst for the company's push to meet the EPA's Energy Star specification, Bounds said. The EPA server specification requires servers to meet three primary criteria. accurate power-supply management capabilities, virtualization functionality&mdash.  [...]

ARM Launches New Chip For Smartphones, Netbooks

ARM has unveiled its smallest, most energy-efficient processor design with its Cortex-A5 chip, that targets smaller, Internet-connected devices such as smartphones, netbooks and embedded systems.  [...] ARM unveiled the new design at its ARM TechCon3 event in Santa Clara, California. The new Cortex-A5 MPCore processor will be cheaper, faster and more energy efficient than its predecessors.  [...] The Cortex-A5 will include ARM's TrustZone security technology and a Neon multimedia processing engine, which was first introduced with the Cortex-A8 processor design. The Neon technology is designed to offer enhanced acceleration for multimedia applications.  [...]
