[...] Without a network connection, ChromiumOS is not very interesting, Anson wrote on a Dell community blog on 25 November. With a network connection, ChromiumOS shines. The Chromium browser is extremely fast and makes for a great Web-centric browsing experience. [...]
Chrome OS To Offer Remote Access To Legacy Apps
Remote access in this case allows users to access their applications from machines other than those where the apps are residing. Citrix' GoToMyPC and others offer this functionality, allowing users to install a client to their computer that lets them access that machine from a web browsing running on another computer. [...] Google Chrome OS is the search engine's stab at a web-based operating system for computers, powering web applications such as the Chrome web browser. World’s Oldest Computer To Be Restored At Bletchley Park
In a statement released this week, the group restoring the Harwell computer, later known as the WITCH computer, from the National Museum of Computing (TNMOC) at Bletchley said that when the machine is restored it will be housed alongside Colossus Mk II which is said to be the world's first electronic computer. [...] The machine was a relay-based computer using 900 Dekatron gas-filled tubes that could each hold a single digit in memory - similar to RAM in a modern computer - and paper tape for both input and program storage, said Kevin Murrell, a director and trustee of TNMOC. Thousands Demand Apology Over Death Of Tech Icon Turing
Discussing the campaign on a podcast with fellow computer scientist Professor Noel Sharkey from the University of Sheffield, Graham-Cumming said that Turing's development of the Turning machine before the Second World War laid the foundations for modern computer science and was also instrumental to the code-breaking work done at Bletchley Park during the war which is believed to have shortened the conflict. [...] Development Park Government / World Computer Park / Work Machine Computer st. [...] The petition, posted on the official website of the Prime Minister's Office by computer scientist John Graham-Cumming, points out that while Turing's contribution to the world of computing have been lauded, he suffered persecution for his sexuality which eventually drove him to suicide. Smokers Burned By Apple Warranty

If Windows 7 Were My Idea …
User Data People / Security Windows Machine / Work Machine Computer st. [...] If Windows 7 were my idea, I wouldn't need different remote access technologies for my main computer and for the XP Mode virtual machine Microsoft tells us enterprises need for backward application compatibility. DirectAccess-secured connectivity is totally cool and easy to use, unless you need access back to corporate from an XP Mode-enabled application, in which case you still need an IPSec client. [...] It's been three months since I installed 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate on my primary work system. Windows 7 runs without crashing much, starts and shuts down faster than Vista did on the same machine, and has a lot of pretty slideshow backgrounds to stare at. However, I would not say the new OS has revolutionised the way I compute or that it has made any significant changes to my day-to-day operations at all. [...]

Songsmith Sings Microsoft’s Hope
Q. What if I prefer a Windows-based machine A. That's an option, but it's one we do not recommend unless you plan to make a career of computer-assisted reporting. By the time you purchase photo, audio and video software for a PC, you probably will have spent more than you would if buying a comparable Apple Computer. [...] Q. What brand or model should I buy A. The faculty has designated Apple Computer as its preferred provider for two primary reasons. (1) Apple's OS X operating system is based on Unix, which makes these computers far less susceptible to viruses than other computers. [...] The company is increasingly becoming a loose network of startups, of incubation projects, I wrote. From those groups' work has come products like Live Mesh, Photosynth, Popfly and WorldWide Telescope. From any smaller company, these projects would be viewed as being hugely innovative. [...]
