Cisco And HP Decide To Part Ways
For its part, HP announced in November that it was buying network company 3Com. Previously it had announced agreements with Brocade and Juniper Networks. Those, along with a deal with QLogic announced on 18 February, pretty much booted Cisco out of its own plans. [...] You bet Cisco will compete. That much has been well known for a while, ever since March 2009, when Cisco gathered up partners such as EMC, VMware, Accenture, NetApp and BMC to build and sell its new Unified Computing System. This is a network-focused, second-generation virtualised data centre concept that competes directly with products from not only HP, but also IBM, Fujitsu, Dell and now Oracle. [...] It boils down to the fact that HP is focused on servers, while Cisco is focused on networks. HP is in the data centre products and services business. Cisco used to be a network pipe fitter but now is moving into HP's territory in a big way. [...]
Brocade Calls Cisco On Efficiency
While Cisco may stumble on a new attack on the data centre, Brocade will be using its recent purchase of Foundry Networks, and a recession-friendly sustainable IT message, to make a play for the network giant's home territory - IP LANs. [...] Brocade's opinion on the data centre is worth having. It claims a 75 percent share of the storage area network (SAN) market, where it and Cisco are the only remaining big players. With Brocade keeping abreast of faster Fibre channel speeds (up to 8Gbit/s now) that lead is even increasing, Phillips told eWEEK in London this week. [...] Cisco may have designs on the data centre, but Brocade plans to use a power-saving message push into Cisco's home ground. [...]
HP Acquisition Of 3Com Could Threaten Cisco Dominance
Now, six month later, HP is looking to buy 3Com for $2.7 billion (£1.6 billion), a move that at once would make it a formidable challenger to Cisco's dominance in the networking space and give it more capabilities as it looks to compete with Cisco, Dell, IBM and others in the push for converged data centre solutions. [...] It's a key factor when talking about converged data centre solutions, which integrate compute, networking, storage and management software into a single offering. Cisco's integrated data centre initiative also is benefiting from its growing alliance with VMware and EMC. [...] The deal, announced 11 November, also ramps up the speculation about what else might happen in the highly competitive networking space, which has its share of vendors, from Brocade Communications Systems to Juniper Networks to F5 Networks. [...]
HP Acquisition Of 3Com Could Threaten Cisco Dominance
The deal now puts pressure on others in the market to figure out how to deal with the new playing field, and could lead to more consolidation, the analysts said. Some say Brocade Communications Systems will be hurt by the deal, but Kerravala believes Brocade and F5 Networks will be OK, given their focus on the data centre and their list of loyal customers. [...] Analysts said that one other company to keep an eye on in all this is IBM. The company in July expanded its partnerships with a host of networking vendors, including Cisco, Juniper and Brocade. IBM officials said such alliances were key to the company's integrated data centre vision. [...] Others that have decisions to make include such players as Juniper Networks and Extreme Networks, they said. One vendor isn't worried about the HP-3Com deal. Stephen Garrison, vice president of marketing at Force10 Networks, said his company's focus on the data centre will help keep the new larger competitor at bay. [...]
Cisco Closes $2.9 Billion Starent Acquisition
Despite opposition to the deal in some quarters, Cisco has completed its $2.9 billion (£1.7 billion) acquisition of Starent Networks, which will become a key part of Cisco's new Mobile Internet Technology Group. [...] Mobile Wireless Data / Network Infrastructure Deal Mobile / Mobile Technology Wireless st. [...] Cisco has strengthened its credentials in the mobile Internet space after it closed on the acquisition of Starent Networks. [...]
IBM Takes Brocade Equipment To Fight Off Cisco
IBM is using network equipment from Brocade to respond to Cisco's data centre initiative. Other server vendors such as HP and Dell, are expected to follow suit with similar network deals. [...] IBM Takes Brocade Equipment To Fight Off Cisco. eWEEK Europe UK. [...] IBM will sell Brocade's Ethernet switches under its own brand - in response to Cisco's move to sell servers. [...]
Cisco Spends $183 million To Acquire ScanSafe
In addition to the deal, the company also announced plans to integrate ScanSafe's service with Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client to provide a secure mobility solution. Cisco also announced that ScanSafe's global network of carrier-grade data centers and multi-tenant architecture will be utilised in order to provide new cloud-security services. [...] The deal, made for approximately $183 million (£112 million), is expected to close in the second quarter of Cisco's fiscal year 2010, and comes only two weeks after security software-as-a-service (SaaS) vendor Purewire was gobbled up by Barracuda Networks. [...] With the acquisition of ScanSafe, Cisco is executing on our vision to build a borderless network security architecture that combines network and cloud-based services for advanced security enforcement, said Tom Gillis, vice president and general manager of Cisco's Security Technology Business Unit, in a statement. [...]
Juniper Challenges Cisco Data Centre Security
A new dynamic security model for data centre networks from Juniper and IBM has the potential to hit Cisco where it hurts. [...] I'm not convinced that Cisco is doing all that much better than direct competitors Juniper Networks and Brocade Communications Systems, both of whom are keeping up with or exceeding Cisco's organic growth. Simply put, these are salad days for networking businesses and Cisco should have been springboarding off that trend to increase its already-hulking stature in the sector. [...] Interestingly, Juniper is making these security applications available on the SRX appliances sold through IBM. For its data centre deployments, IBM is bundling the Juniper gear and applications with its data centre equipment to provide a holistic solution to match those fielded by Cisco and, arguably, HP. [...]
Stand By For Cisco’s Server Announcement
In September 2007, eWEEK's networking writer Paula Musich interviewed Jayshree Ullal, Cisco's senior vice president of data centre, switching and security technology, about how the company expected this long-range strategy to play out. [...] Cisco has the money, the talent, the installed base, and the leadership to change the game and make a serious bid to provide more in data centres than just the network. But - just what will it be doing. [...] Two years ago at the VMWorld conference in San Francisco, Chambers took the unusual step for a keynote address of promoting his own company's virtualisation offering, VFrame Data Center appliance - which is, in effect, Cisco's data centre operating system. [...]
