Smart Grids Increasingly Vulnerable To Cyber Attacks
In a new report released by McAfee, several noted security experts discussed the improving cyberwarfare capabilities of some countries and the risks facing critical infrastructures. Facebook Execs To Meet Child Protection Agency
Facebook uses default settings which are hostile to privacy, said Simon Davies, director of Privacy International, at a discussion run by the University of Southampton's Institute for Web Science last month. It is a con trick on users. They are being manipulated by social network sites it is disgraceful and probably unlawful. [...] The announcement of the meeting follows a campaign by CEOP to encourage social networking sites to install a panic button to allow suspected abuse to be reported. While some social networking sites immediately agreed to install the buttons, Facebook has been resisting the CEOP button. A new report from the U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit, of which a summary was released on 17 Aug, focuses on the cyber-attacks that accompanied Russia's military assault and calls for the creation of an international organisation to provide risk advisories when political, economic or military circumstances make a cyber-attack likely or when warning signs of such an attack are detected. [...] Georgia's second response&mdash.to shift the hosting of its Websites to other countries where attack traffic could more easily be filtered out&mdash.was more effective, according to the report. [...] When resentment against a pro-Georgian blogger boiled over into a distributed denial-of-service attack against social networking sites on 6 Aug, it seemed to echo the cyber-attacks that occurred when Russia invaded Georgia in August 2008. Physical Loss Or Theft Still Main Reason For Data Breaches
The international nature of cyber-crime was underscored in the report, which found a significant growth of malicious activity in countries such as Brazil and India. Brazil cracked the top three of Symantec's list of countries with the most malicious activity, marking the first time since 2006 a country other than the United States, China or Germany has ranked in the top three. Spammers Use Translation To Hit Europe
Released this week, the MessageLabs Intelligence Report, said that some countries are experiencing levels of spam higher than the global average thanks to increasing use of translation software. [...] According to the report, global spam levels stayed at a level of around 90 percent, but some countries experiencied levels in excess of 95 percent, such as Germany, France and The Netherlands. Germany overtook France as the most spammed country with levels rising to 97. Facebook aims to plug its real-time content gap by buying FriendFeed, a social network aggregator that lets users create custom feeds of content from Facebook, Digg, YouTube and other services.
